Lathikhela (Stick Fight)

Lathikhela is basically one kind of strategy for self-defense. During the British rule, the Zamindars of undivided Bengal (East Bengal and West Bengal) employed the skilled fighters-with-sticks for their defence. In the char (strip of sandy land rising out of a river bed) areas, people still use the skilled fighters-with-sticks to take possession of land. This game is arranged as a showdown of might and courage in different ceremonies including Muharram and Puja. The sticks used in the fights are 4-5 ft long and are smeared with oil. Every player with his own stick displays the art of warfare very skillfully. At present, man of all ages including children, young men, old people participate in the stick fight. This game is played all over Bangladesh and this area as well.
