Durgasagar Dighi (Pond)

The Durgasagar Dighi which was dug in 1780 is situated at Madhabpasha under Babuganj upazila 12 kilometres north-west from Barisal town. The old Dighi Durgasagar is one of the spectacular tourist spots of Bangladesh. This was named after Durgadevi, the mother of Raja Joynarayan. But many of the people call it as Madhabpasha Dighi. Bakla-Chandradeep Royal family members had the house in Madhabpasha village. The relics of the palaces, temples, and other buildings built by them are still found to exist. After the independence of Bangladesh, a small island was created at the middle of the large pond which consists of about 46 acres of land. Around the pond, in all, there is 1.6 kilometre (1 mile) long walking track. In winter many migratory birds come here. This place which is resounded with the twittering and chirping of birds creates a different type of touch of soothing love in the mind of the tourists. This is the proper time for the tourists to travel/ visit the place, but the lonely ambience of the bank of the Dighi attracts the tourists in other seasons of the year too. The pond was reformed to some extent during the years 1997-1999.
