Poet Sufia Kamal’s Homestead

Poet and intellectual Sufia Kamal was born in 1911 at Shaistabad village in Barisal Sadar upazila. Shaistabad village is found immediately after crossing the Taltoli River. The village is surrounded by the river and it looks like an island. Her father Sayed Abdul Bari was a lawyer by profession. Besides social service and literary pursuit, she worked  throughout her life for women’s awakening .The poet during her life time met Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain, Mahatma Gandhi, National poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Palli Kobi Jasimuddin, Editor of the Saugat Patrika Mohammad Nasiruddin so on noted personalities. Sufia Kamal in 1931 out of the Muslim women became elected as the first member to the ‘Indian Women Federation’. She throughout her llife founded various organizations and ran them. The role of the poet and the role of the members of her family during language movement of ’52 and Liberation War of ’71 were very praiseworthy and appreciable. Out of her notable publication `Sanjher Maya’ is one of them. She obtained Bangla Academy Award, Ekushey Padak (Medal) including Begum Rokeya Padak (Medal) and many other awards and honors. The homestead of the poet has been lost in the Arialkhan River. At present, there are nothing as remains excect some trees and plants. But the poet’s memory-laden. Shaistabad High School still survives. This poet and social leader died in 1999.
