Shital Pati and Handloom Industries

Jhalakati is one of the districts of the country where shitalpati (a kind of mat very cool and smoothing to lie on) is prepared. Eighty Hindu families of Hailakathi and Dohorsankar villages under Rajapur upazila of Jhalakati live on preparing sitalpati. Besides these, a few families of Rajapur Sadar,  Timirkathi of Nalchhity, Kamdevpur and Kasharipatty prepare shitalpati. There are 40-50 families in Jhalkathi district are engaged in this profession. Once upon a time, Jhalakati had specialty of handloom industries throughout the country especially gamchha (napkin). Even 10 to 15 years back the women members of these families prepared velvet sharis, hazarbuti (flowery pattern) sharis, printed sharis along with gamchha, lungi, mosquito-nets and wrappers. Due to the expansion of making cloths and lungis by power looms, at present almost all weaving families have been engaged in different professions except a few ones.
