Nakshi Kantha (Embroidered Quilt)

The folk-art of this country is very rich. A unique characteristic of our folk-art is to make nakshi kantha with cloth and to make Shika (a reticulated bag made of jute strings, kept hanging usually from the wall or celing). Nakshi Kantha is a symbol of our native traditions. Nakshi katha almost in every marriage of this area is given to the bridegroom party as a gift from the bride party. Usually the old cotton saris, lungis or cloths are arranged in several layers one upon another, then designs of various flowers and birds are embroidered on the arranged cloths with color threads, thus is made nakshi kantha which is not only attractive to look at but also comfortable to use. Recently Nakshi Kanthas are made of new cloths and are commercially marketed. This reputation for Nakshi Kantha has crossed the boundary of the country and has spread abroad and those are being exported to many countries of the world.
