Baikkar Bil Fish Sanctuary

Baeikkar Bil of Haeil haor of Sreemangal is a famous area full of biodiversity. It has been decided to preserve the large waterbody as a sanctuary for fish resources. The area of Baikkar Bil is about 100 hectares. Here, Ayr (giant river-catfish), Koi (climbing fish), Meni (mottled nandus), Foli (flat fish), Pabda (sheat fish) and many other species of fish are cultivated here. This Bil is a safe home not only for fish, but also for birds and other animals. An observation tower has been erected to observe the birds that come in winter. The birds that are worth of mention are Cormorant, Pond Heron, Egret, Cattle Egret, Grey Herd, Yellow Bittern, Cinnomon, Bittern, Bronze Winged Jacana, Pheasant tailed Jacana, Common Moorhen, Purple Swamphen, Black-headed Ibis, Pallas’s Fish Eagle. The government declared the Bil as the sanctuary for the birds.
