Narrative Opera of Narail

From the ancient times, the narrative opera is a favorite song to the common people. Narail’s narrative opera means a Jarigan (a kind of folk song composed in memory of the tragedy of martyrs at Karbala and is sung usually in Bangladesh on the occasion of Muharram), a  Kabigan (a  light song  in the form of questions and answers). Religious and philosophical subject matters are included in these two types of songs. Narrative opera is sung by one lead singer accompanied by 5 /6 choristers.  During the course of the narrative opera, one lead singer questions, another lead singer answers the questions and makes counter questions during the period of the songs. Usually the narrative opera continues throughout the night. Bijoy Sarkar and Muslim Bayati are famous for Narail’s Kabi and Jarigan.
