Temple of Chaitanya Dev

This temple of Chaitanya Dev is locally known as ‘Thakurbari’. This temple is located at the foot of 60 metre-high hill at Dhaka Dakshin Union Sadar under the upazila Golapganj 17 kilometres to the south-east of Sylhet town. Chaitanya Dev was the inhabitant of Nabodip of Nadia region. He introduced Vaishnavism and devotionalism. The temple yard is 13 stair cases up. At first the Singhadar (main gate adorned with a figure of a lion) and on the left five small temples are there. Here, the Dol Mandir is the main temple. Sri Chaitanya who was born in 15th century (23 Falgun, 891 according to Bangla calendar) was one of the reformers of Bengal. He believed in the brotherly behaviour with all classes of people irrespective of race, caste and creed. Here, on Sunday of the month of Chaitra Baruni (a bathing festival held on the eve of the fourteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight of Chaitra) and Rathjatra (the Hindu festival of Jagannatha going on a chariot for a sea bath), are held, and on the occasion of his birth anniversary, a fair is held on the day of full moon of Falgun.
